Many present-day stereotypes have their origins in the early modern period. In order to contribute to our understanding of the appearance, persistence, and disappearance of cultural images, this course traces the ways in which peoples have described other peoples and themselves, exploring the interconnections between stereotyping and a set of themes, including, amongst others, travel writing, European expansion, the Enlightenment, Vampires, map-making, power and politics, law, religion, folklore, borders, and cultural perception. The course is taught in tandem between the University of Vienna and CEU and will culminate in a two-day student conference in Vienna (2/3 December) where the participants from both universities will have the opportunity to engage with original source materials and to present their readings of stereotypes in a workshop setting.
