Slavophile ideology played a significant role in the Russian intellectual and political tradition. Pan-Slavism had a substantial impact on official ideology and served to legitimize Russian expansion in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the Middle East. Today, when Vladimir Putin, in his speeches, openly appeals to the ideas of Russian Pan-Slavism in its most aggressive form, deconstruction of the imperialistic narrative has become of not only academic but of practical importance.
Natalia Kovalchuk is an Associate Professor of History at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. Her research focuses on the modern intellectual history of East-Central Europe, national and supranational movements such as Pan Slavism, and the current life of 19th-century ideologies.
