This lecture analyses trade exchanges between the Soviet Union, Ghana and Mali during the first half of the 1960s, exploring the principles that guided trade. In Moscow, economic decisions were subordinated to political considerations, and in particular to Cold War competition against the United States, Western Europe, and Western businesses. West African leaders saw alternatives to trade with Britain and France as essential to the push for economic independence.
